School Visits

AUTHOR TALKS with Nikki Rogers

Author / Illustrator / Teacher / Speaker

I love to visit schools and kindergartens in the Gold Coast area to share my story and inspire children to be the best they can be.

There are lots of things that I can do when I visit such as:

  • Story time sessions: Most suited for prep to year 2.
  • Book-themed lessons: Most suited for years 2 to 6.
  • Author Talk: Most suited for years 3 to 6.
  • Creative writing & illustration workshops: for years 3 to 6.

A storytime session includes me reading one of my children’s stories, some rhyming, dancing, actions, a craft activity and question time. The sessions go for around 30 minutes and are best suited to groups of around 15 to 25 children. These are most suited to the kindergarten/prep/year 1 age group.

My author talk is most suited to grades 3 to 6. During the author talk, I tell my story about what inspired me to start writing. I bring in lots of different bits and pieces such as my first drafts, illustration sketches, original illustrations and print proofs to show the children part of the process.  If I have access to a projector I can also share an animation of one of my books. An author talk generally goes for around 45 minutes.  I can also tailor a talk to suit shorter lengths of time or combine it with an illustration workshop if time allows.

For 1 hour sessions, along with a brief author talk, I can guide children through a poetry writing or illustration workshop.

These sessions are great for grade 2 upwards and include a storytime session with one of my books and hands-on activities to accompany the story. I can present a book-themed lesson for any of my books such as:

A Beautiful Girl – This lesson is a self-esteem builder for girls, as it encourages them to identify and value the beauty in themselves and others. (suitable for an all-girls group).

The Greatness In You – This is a great lesson to inspire children to see the greatness in themselves and others, and recognise how their unique qualities can make the world a better place.

What Love Looks Like – This lesson aims to help children recognise how they feel loved and the different ways that others experience and express love. This would be appropriate around mother’s day or Valentine’s Day.

If you are located on the Gold Coast or the surrounding area and would like to talk to me about visiting your school, send me a message via the contact page and I’ll get back to you ASAP. Thank you!
